As nice as it is to catch up with a favourite series character, it's also really interesting to see a favourite author branching out in a new direction.  The Diggers Rest Hotel introduces a new central character - Charlie Berlin and the blurb to this book is very intriguing.

From the Blurb:

In 1947, two years after witnessing the death of a young Jewish woman in Poland, Charlie Berlin has rejoined the police force a different man.  Sent to investigate a spate of robberies in rural Victoria, he soon discovers that World War II has changed even the most ordinary of places and people.

Opening Lines:

Berlin found the potato the night before the the SS officer shot the Jewess.  Around five in the afternoon the German guards forced the column of shivering POW's out of the sleet and into the meagre shelter of a wooden barn left shattered by repeated Russian air strikes.
